Srinagar, Apr 06 (KNS): Kashmir on Friday observed a complete shut down against the recent killings of militants and civilians.
In parts of Kashmir Valley, the curfew-like situation was imposed. All the educational and commercial establishments were closed and traffic remained off the roads. However, the very restricted vehicular movement was visible on uptown Srinagar.
The historic Jamia Masjid in the old city of Srinagar was locked down by the government to bar people from offering mandatory congregational prayers here.
Amid restrictions in old city areas, all four gates of the Jamia Masjid remained locked today as a precautionary measure.
Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL), on Thursday, had called for peaceful protests after Friday’s congregational prayers against the recent killings in Kashmir.
At least 20 people lost their lives during the separate encounters that include 13 militants, four civilians, and three Army troopers.
The government on Thursday evening has decided to suspend the class work on Friday after students from different colleges came on roads to protest the killings of militants and civilians.
Meanwhile, Clashes were reported at many places across Kashmir. Sources informed Kashmir News Service, that soon after the Fridayprayers, Cashes between government forces and protesters erupted in central Kashmir's Charar-i-Sharief.
“Scores of youth while raising the pro-freedom slogans, started marching towards the main town and government forces came into action and fired several canisters of tear gas shells,” a source informed.
In north Kashmir’s Palhallan area, clashes erupted between the protestors and security forces after Friday prayers.
Meanwhile, Police on Friday foiled a protest march of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) on Friday against the recent killings in Kashmir.
In a statement issued here, the front spokesperson said that Jammu Kashmir Zonal president Noor Muhammad Kalwal, zonal vice president Muhammad Yasin Butt along with activists, Muhammad Haneef Dar, Imtiyaz Ahmad Ganaie and Imtiyaz Ahmad Shah were arrested by police when they were tried to hold a protest against the recent killings in Kashmir.
“Despite police highhandedness, crackdown and oppression, JKLF leaders and activists led by zonal general secretary Sheikh Abdul Rashid managed to gather at Masjid Shareef Abi-Guzar where they staged a peaceful protest against Shopian killings and oppression unleashed on students across the valley,” the spokesperson said.
Reports reaching KNS said that a Station House Officer was critically injured after being hit by a stone during clashes between youth and forces at Fore-Shore road.
“Manzoor Ahmad Beigh resident of uptown Srinagar was injured critically, after being hit by a stone near Dagh Park,” a police officer said.
“Our colleague SHO Nigeen Inspector Manzoor got injured today morning in a stone pelting incident. He is being treated in hospital,” Kashmir zone police tweeted. (KNS)
