Soon clashes between forces and students erupted leading to the closure of shops and other business establishments in the town.
Police used tear gas and baton charged the protesting students, leading to injuries to seven of them, it said.
Five injured students were brought to district hospital Anantnag where from one of them was shifted to Srinagar for specialised treatment, Global News Service quoted a doctor.
Two other students were provided first aid locally, the report added.
