Srinagar, May 19 (Kashmir 24X7) : Authorities on Saturday foiled the Lal chowk march of separatist by imposing sealing the commercial Hub and imposing restrictions in Srinagar areas.
The Lal Chowk chalo call was given by Joint Resistance Leadership (JRL) comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Muhammad Yasin Malik who had appealed people to march towards Lal chowk today to protest against the Modi’s visit to the state.Modi attended the commencement of work on Zojila Tunnel on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway at an event in Jive-tsal in Leh tomorrow. He also laid foundation stone for Srinagar Ring Road and Jammu Ring Road at separate events at Sher-e-Kashmir International Conference Centre (SKICC), Srinagar and at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium in Jammu the same day.
In response of the call given by the JRL, the disitrct administration Srinagar imposed restrictions in various areas of Srinagar and also sealed Lal Chowk area to thwart any possible protest rally against the PM’s visit.
All the entry and exit points of the commercial Hub Lal chowk were sealed by the forces who were deployed in large number.
Officials said that besides Lal Chowk, restrictions were imposed within the territorial jurisdictions of Khanyar, Rainawari, Nowhatta, Safakadal, MR Gunj, Nishat and partially in Maisuma and Kralkhud police stations of Srinagar.
Witnesses said that the government forces had erected temporary barricades on the roads, halting the vehicular as well as the pedestrian movement in the restriction bound areas.
Besides, a complete shutdown was observed across the Valley to protest against the Modi’s visit to the Valley.
All the shops, business establishments, educational institutions, petrol pumps and other things remained closed throughout the day while as the vehicular movement was also thin on the roads.
Meanwhile, authorities detained Hurriyat (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq after he tried to march towards Lal Chowk to protest Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Kashmir.
Mirwaiz according to the Hurriyat leaders defied the house detention and tried to march towards Lal Chowk.
However, police contingent deployed outside his Nigeen residence prevented him to move towards Lal Chowk and detained him.
He was later lodged at police station Nigeen, Hurriyat leaders said.
Authorities also detained scores of Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) leaders and activists after they tried to carry out a protest rally towards Lal Chowk.
A spokesperson said that JKLF leaders and activists assembled at Budshah Chowk and marched towards Lal Chowk, but policemen already deployed there prevented them from marching ahead.
He said scores of activists and leaders were detained and were shifted to Kothi Bagh police station.
Police also foiled the protest march by the independent legislator Er Rasheed against Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the region and detained him.
Rasheed was detained by police along with his supporters when they tried to take a protest rally from his Jawahar Nagar residence, but policemen deployed in strength took him into custody, reports said.
Besides, Muslim Khawateen Marakaz headed by Yasmeen Raja also staged protest in Srinagar’s press enclave against Modi’s visit to the Valley.
Meanwhile, a top police official said that the situation across the Valley remained peaceful and under control throughout the day. (Source )
