The parents and the students in north Kashmir districts have demanded change in school timing citing non-availability of transport in rural areas in early hours.
The parents said the government should fix the school timing from 9.30 am to 3.30 pm for schools outside municipal limits, “for the larger interest of the students”.
A group of parents said that earlier the practice was that the government would fix school timing for rural school half an hour late than what was prescribed for the city schools.
“But the government discarded its past practice and fixed uniform time for both the rural as well as urban schools from May this year, which has caused inconveniences to the students in rural areas,” the parents said.
Pertinently, the former education minister in May decided to have uniform school timing in the city as well as in the rural districts including Chenab valley and other third (hard) zone areas like Karnah, Machil and Gurez.
The school timing was fixed from 9 am to 3 pm for all government as well private schools across in the Kashmir valley and for schools falling in winter zones Jammu.
“In rural areas the students have to travel at least eight to 10 kilometers to reach their school and they rarely reach on time due to non-availability of public transport in most of the areas in the early hours,” said Muhammad Altaf a parent from north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.
The teachers also seconded the parents saying the school timing from 9 am to 3 pm was neither feasible for the teachers nor the students in rural districts.
Earlier, the students from south Kashmir districts appealed the authorities for change of school timing citing that the present timing was causing inconvenience to them.
In the wake of the demand for change of school timing, the directorate of school education Kashmir (DSEK) had received an official communication from the civil secretariat Srinagar seeking a report from the department. However, according to sources, the report was not furnished till July 28.
“I am directed to invite the department’s attention toward a letter regarding rescheduling of school timing in south Kashmir districts and to say that the report/comment in this matter is still awaited. In this context you are requested to expedite the report and furnish the same to Governor secretariat and OSD to advisor in time,” reads a letter sent to DSEK from under secretary, education department.
Director school education Kashmir (DSEK) G N Itoo meanwhile ruled out any chance of rescheduling the school timing saying the new timing for schools “is fixed in October month only.”
"The present timing (9am to 3pm) was fixed on demand of the students who said they don't reach tuitions on time as schools close at 3:30 pm," he said.
