Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti Thursday said her government would not allow law to be obstructed and justice would be delivered in the rape-and-murder case of an 8-year-old Bakerwal girl Asifa Bano in Kathua district.
The rape-and-murder of Asifa has created a controversy after lawyers in Jammu called for a shutdown yesterday, demanding case be handed over to the CBI.
"The law will not be obstructed by the irresponsible actions and statements of a group of people. Proper procedures are being followed, investigations are on the fast track & justice will be delivered," Mehbooba said in a tweet.
Mehbooba further said, “I want to assure the entire nation that I stand committed not just to ensure justice for Asifa but also seek exemplary punishment for those responsible for a crime whose brutal savagery has shamed humanity”.
“We will never ever let another child suffer in this way. We will bring a new law that will make the death penalty mandatory for those who rape minors, so that little Asifa’s case becomes the last,” she added.
On Monday, lawyers in Kathua had tried to prevent the Crime Branch official from filing the charge sheet in the case.
The charge sheet has revealed some chilling details about how the girl was allegedly kidnapped, drugged, raped inside a place of worship before being killed.
The chargesheet of the Crime Branch revealed that the Gujjar child was raped while rituals were being performed in the Kathua temple.
An eight-year-old Gujjar child, Asifa was looking for her ponies when a boy heard her voice and kidnapped her in the forest area of Rasana, Hiranagar in Kathua district in Jammu on January 10.
The victim underwent a horrendous assault, was kept in captivity in a temple, drugged unconscious and gang raped at least thrice by accused persons till she was brutally murdered and dumped in the forest.
The main accused in the crime are Shanji Ram, 60, a former revenue official, his nephew, a juvenile and son Vishal, a student of B.Sc. Agriculture at Akansha College Mirapur, UP, and Special Police Officer (SPO) Deepak Khajuria.
While other accused Sub Inspector Anand Dutta and Head constable, Tilak Raj were found involved in corruption to shield actual culprits and destroying crucial evidence, another accused Parvesh Kumar and SPO Surinder Kumar provided assistance in executing crime.
